The first consumer-oriented print publication dedicated solely to video games was Computer and Video Games, which launched in November 1981. Its first column-based coverage of the industry was penned by “Arcade Alley” writers Bill Kunkel and Arnie Katz, who also authored the first weekly syndicated video game column in the United States.
Much of the information behind gaming is kept under wraps until release, and video game journalists often must rely on anonymous sources or even hunches to fill in the gaps. Even the selection of voice actors is usually a matter of confidentiality and high-level contract negotiations, and revealing such details can be a difficult balance to strike.
