The Flat Fold Respirator
The flat fold respirator is a flexible medical mask that folds in on itself, making it easy to fit in your pocket, purse, or other small space. The design is also ideal for those who have difficulty achieving a seal with other masks. The flat design allows more of the face to contact the mask, providing a better fit and less irritation. This mask is available in several sizes, so you can find one that fits your head.
What is a flat fold respirator?
N95 masks, which are also referred to as surgical masks, are personal protective equipment (PPE) that protect the wearer from airborne contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, or from liquid contaminating the face. These filtering facepiece respiratory (FFR) masks are regulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to ensure they offer the advertised level of protection.
In a recent study, researchers compared the fit factors and seal pressures of four molded, cup-shaped N95 FFR models to two flat-fold “one size fits all” FFR models, using human subjects who donned each mask according to manufacturer instructions. Subjects then performed a user seal check with each model, and were allowed to continue performing the test until the mask showed no signs of leakage.
The flat fold masks were found to be more comfortable than the molded masks, with higher seal pressures and fewer reported leakages in both the medium and large-size versions of each. However, the results of this study must be interpreted carefully: the relationship between fit factor and seal pressures is not necessarily linear, and many variables can affect both, including facial anthropometry, skin texture, mask features (e.g., presence of inner flanges, pliable nose bars), and other environmental factors.
